How to Build a Small Pond

Step 1: Mark Placement of Pond
Determine the location, size and shape of the pond. Mark out the outline of the pond with landscape paint. Dig a hole wide and deep enough to accommodate the pond. Add a 2" layer of sand to the bottom and sides of the hole.
Step 2: Spread Underlayment and Liner
Underlayment protects the rubber liner from tears caused by roots and rocks. Spread out a large piece so it covers the bottom and sides of the hole and extends up and out of the pond. Spread a large piece of pond liner so that it covers the underlayment.
Step 3: Complete Pond
Completely cover the pond liner with small and medium sized stones. Around the edges, use larger boulders. Trim off any excess liner and underlayment. Add water and a store-bought fountain. Attach fountain to water source and plug it in. Add plants in and around the pond.
