How to Build a Rustic Log Picnic Table

This easy project makes use of reclaimed lumber you may find in your own backyard. Walnut slabs give the table a rustic look, while a coat of varnish protects the tabletop from the elements and wear and tear.

        Highlights:

        Step 1: Cut Lumber

Begin by choosing the material you would like to use. For a rustic look, select precut walnut slabs for the tabletop and benches, with 2x4s for support. Cut the material down to size, then sand and plane the pieces to create a smooth finish.

        Step 2: Prep the Tabletop

Lay the pieces face down on a flat surface, then notch the bottom of each of the panels. Place 2x4s in the notched openings and screw them into place. This will hold the tabletop pieces firmly together and keep them level.

        Step 3: Attach the Legs

With the tabletop securely fastened, attach the legs to the 2x4s in an "A-frame" and secure them in place with clamps, screws and heavy duty lag bolts. For extra support, screw a beam to the legs and the middle of the table.

        Step 4: Finishing

Finish the table with varnish for protection against the elements.
