Step 2: Gather Your Materials and Tools

        Materials and Tools:

        1x6 pressure-treated boards
1/2 pint oil-based stain or paint
        finishing nails
        3-inch deck screws
        biscuit cutter
        2x2 cleats
        power drill with wood bit
        hammer
        measuring tape
        pencil
        circular or table saw
        carpenter’s square
        angled brush
        dust mask
        safety goggles
        hearing protection

Step 3: Build the Planter Boxes

This decorative bench comes with a built-in garden.

Using a circular or table saw, cut 1x6 boards into 15-inch slats.

Use a biscuit cutter for sturdy joints. Glue secures the boards.

Cleats in the corners will give added support.

        Secure sides and bottom.

Spaces in the bottom allow for water drainage.

Step 4: Add the Bench Seat and Stain

        Use a 2 x 4 to support the seat.

Use 2 x 4s, also, to frame the seat.

Nail and glue the slats crosswise.

Tip: You can sand off any excess glue.

To raise the planters off the deck, add pressure-treated feet.

To protect the bench from weather, apply exterior stain.
