        Planting Bed

Step 1: Watch an Overview Video

Step 2: Gather Your Materials and Tools

        Materials and Tools:

        edging
        sand
        weed-control garden fabric
        anchor pins
        scissors
        shovel
        trowel
        tiller
        mulch
        garden hose
        water-based spray paint
        rubber mallet

Step 3: Outline and Till the Bed

Start by outlining border with a garden hose. When you’re happy with shape, mark the outline with flour.

        Till interior of bed.

        Remove any weeds and/or roots

        Step 4: Dig a Trench

Dig trench along painted line the width of edging and 4 to 6 inches deep and as wide as the edging.

Pour enough sand in bottom of trench that edging extends 1/2 inch above ground.

Place stakes or anchors about every 4 feet.

        Backfill trench on bed side.

        Step 5: Add Garden Frabric

Roll weed-control garden fabric over bed.

Overlap fabric by at least 4 inches. Seams can be stapled or pegged.

        Step 6: Finish the Bed

Cut ‘Xs’ in fabric where plants will go.

Work ‘X’ gently over existing plant or plant new plant through ‘X.’

Cover fabric with 2 to 3 inches of mulch, bark, pine straw, gravel, or decorative chips.
