Push sticks and push blocks are necessary tools for the table saw and joiner. They act as extensions for your hands to keep them away from the blade and out of harm's way when cutting.

Use push blocks with a joiner. The push block has a rubber pad on the bottom to hold it against the board during the cut. It helps push the board along the blade and provides a barrier between hands and the cutter. You can also get a push stick that has a kickstand underneath so you can use it to push the board from behind as well.
