Measure one piece of wood at a time. If you measure a piece on top of a stack, the reading may not reflect the piece you are measuring, but that piece and one or two pieces underneath it as well. Also make sure your hand is not behind the wood where you are measuring because that can give you an inaccurate reading as well.
