A plunge router has springs that allow the motor to move up and down. A locking lever holds the router in place once the router is set to the depth needed. Set the depth using a depth rod and turret stop.
A plunge router can make interior cuts. To make a faux panel door, a double-sided bit is used, and the plunge bit cuts from the bottom as well.
A template is used to create the faux panel door, and is comprised of two frames stacked. The bottom frame fits around the panel, while the top frame serves as a guide to keep the router going in a straight line. When measuring how far the frame needs to overlap the panel, take notice of which side of the router base you measure from (flat or rounded side) and use the same side of the router against the frame when making the cut.
Clamp the panel and template to the worktable. Do not place the clamp in an area that might interfere with the progress of the router. Lock the router at the proper depth and cut from one corner to the next. Then lift up the router and turn it. Go back to the proper depth and cut to the next corner. Repeat the process until the panel is complete.
