    • Disastrous Yard!, In June 2011 I purchased a Mantis tiller with the intention of putting in a new lawn, a low-grow fescue, and eventually flowerbeds and a garden. I also purchased vegetation killer and treated the entire lot to prepare for tilling and planting in the fall; I figured that a couple months of dying for the vegetation would be enough. In the meantime I also rented a stump grinder for my sons to use in removing the five large stumps left from tree removal in the back yard.
In September 2011 I started tilling and moving dirt out of the front yard which was high and into the back yard which was low. What I was not prepared for was the record rainfall we had that year. I spent the winter with a dead and partially muddy lot because after all the rain we had in the fall we also had a record winter for the one of our lowest snowfalls!
In the spring of 2012 I started in again after the weather warmed. I re-tilled what I had done in the fall before the rain and started in with re-grading and moving dirt. Then the city of Elyria stepped in and threatened to fine me if I did not plant something; so I dropped grass seed, against my better judgment, and spent every weekend of the summer pulling weeds. And I am not just talking weeds! I am talking Jurassic weeds! Crab grass three feet in diameter just to name one variety! I saw weeds I have never seen before!
So the summer of 2012 was spent on weed patrol with few tufts of grass and tons of weeds. By the way we had a drought that year! Also, I took a week of vacation in July to split the wood still in my back yard that the city was threatening to haul away, at my expense! In August 2012 I re-tilled the front yard, after all the weed removal, to prepare for seeding which I finally managed to drop during the last two weekends in October. But we had a colder than usual autumn so nothing sprouted any time soon, another winter of mud!
So here we are in May 2013 and the city wants to know what I am going to do about the condition of my yard! So I told them I would put down more seed and water as much as possible. Then they contacted me to see what I was going to do about the back yard, which (by the way) still has stump remnants that need to be removed.
I am not sure they have any concept of what happens in the real world when someone works Monday thru Friday and can only do yard work on weekends, when it does not rain! To top that off I do not have the money to put into additional supplies; the only thing I can do is put in sweat equity and it looks like it is going to take lots of that! HELP!? Please?
Enjoy the pics! I do every time I look at them! Not sure if I should laugh or cry! If you would like to see more mud with tufts of grass I can take some, I have not cataloged 2013 yet!, Yards Design
