Use a plastic drinking straw to remove glue from an inside joint. Cutting at an angle, snip about 1/2 inch from one end of the straw. Slide the straw across the glue so that the straw scoops it up.

Before gluing together two pieces of wood, put a strip of tape over the joint. Using a utility knife, score a line through the tape, down the center of the joint. After gluing the wood, use a rag to wipe off any excess. Removing the tape should take care of any remaining glue.

Paint scrapers may be used to remove dried glue from wood. Take care to avoid cutting into the wood, and wear gloves.

After staining wood, it's hard to tell if any glue splotches remain. To detect splotches, rub mineral spirits onto the wood. The mineral spirits will reveal any excess glue. Use a piece of low-grit sandpaper to remove it.
