To get a wider cutting area, loosen the nut on the end of the bit and turn the knob just above the nut. The teeth on the bit will separate from one another, providing a wider cutting area. Up to a 1/4-inch slot can be cut with this router bit. Larger bits will make cuts to about 1/2 inch.
