  • Installing the Light
  • Host Amy Devers finishes her unique table lamp by installing the light.
    From "Freeform Furniture"
    episode DFFF-210

Freeform Furniture's luminous table lamp is completed by centering the lighting unit and routint the groove to accept the cylinder. Amy Devers rounds the corners of the base with the disc sander, applies a spray on primer and then an even coat of white spray paint. She marks and drills the holes and screws on the feet.

The lamp cord is then fed through the hole in the base and the wire coating is removed. Pilot holes are made in the plywood base and screws are driven into place. Lastly, Amy Devers screws the light bulb into place, inserts the frosted acrylic cylinder over it and places on the tabletop.

    Installing the Light

    1. For the lighting unit inside, you need a light bulb, a regular old porcelain socket, a lamp wire with a pre-molded plug, and an add-on floor dimmer switch.

    2. To diffuse the light from the bar bulb, use the frosted acrylic cylinder. The base of the table is made out of 3/4" plywood.

    3. First you need to find the center so you can center the lighting unit and route the groove to accept the cylinder.

    4. Use a straightedge ruler and draw a line from the corners of the plywood. Because the piece is square the center point is easy to find. It is simply where the two lines intersect.

    5. Line up the drill bit with the center mark.

    6. Use the circle cutting router jig to cut the groove in the plywood for the acrylic tube (figure A).

    7. Fit the pivot point on the arm of the circle cutting router jig into the drilled hole.

    8. The pivot then guides the cutting bit of the router in a perfect circle.

    9. Apply downward pressure guiding the router in a clockwise direction while routing the groove.

    10. Use the disc sander to round the corners of the base.

    11. Apply a spray-on primer. After the primer is dry, apply an even coat of white spray paint.

    12. After five minutes of dry time, mark the placement on the bottom of the plywood base for the feet.

    13. Drill the pilot holes and screw on the feet.

    14. Feed the lamp cord through the hole in the base and remove the wire coating.

    15. With the holes already drilled through the acrylic, position the drill bit making sure not to knick the acrylic.

    16. Make the pilot holes in the plywood base. Drive the screws into place. You don't want to risk cracking the acrylic, so use a hand-held screw driver to tighten the screws into place (figure B).

    17. Screw the light bulb into place and insert the frosted acrylic cylinder over it.

    18. Place on the table top.
