  • Powder Coating Nightstand Legs
  • Learn how to finish the nightstand by powder coating the table legs.
    From "Freeform Furniture"
    episode DFFF-205

Host Amy Devers sub-contracts a friend to add a power coat to the table legs to give the nightstand a decorative and protective finish.

The contractor cleans the table and then uses an electrostatic spray gun to spray a thick even coat on. Finally, he puts the table in a curing oven and lets the powder bake. Once it's finished baking, Amy puts the glass into place and the table is ready to highlight any little girl's bedroom.

Note: Powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish.

    1. The powder coat specialist hangs the table up and then cleans off any dust particles with an air hose.

    2. He then pours the pink powder into an electrostatic spray gun. He sprays on a thick, even coat. The gun shoots out a charge with the powder that allows it to adhere to the steel. The powder itself contains a mixture of finely ground particles of pigments, resins and glass.

    3. Once applied, the specialist moves the table into a walk-in curing oven, which has been preheated to 400 degrees. The powder bakes on the table for 10 minutes. When the time is up, the powder has melted together to form a durable, beautiful and washable finish. Once it cools and hardens, it is ready to go.

    4. Cap off the open ends of the tubes with some plastic feet (figure A) and then drop the glass into position.
