Making a Leather Form for Use with a Vacuum Bag

    • Cut two pieces of 3/4" plywood down to 12.5" x 6".

    • Stack the two pieces of plywood together with yellow glue.

    • Let dry.

    • Set the table saw blade at an angle of 10" and with the miter gauge cut off the two ends of the plywood square to a length of 12".

    • Secondly, set the table saw fence to 5.5" and push the plywood square through lengthwise to cut the side at 10" (running the plywood along the fence).

    • Turn around and cut the other side 10".

    • Next, take a file and round over the edges and corners to make them less ridged (this will make the leather tray fluid without any crisp lines).

    • With a putty knife and spackle, fill in any flaws in the form. Let dry. Sand down the spackle to a smooth surface.

    • Finally, cover the form with clear package tape. This will act like a barrier from the glue and will allow the leather tray to be removed from the form.

    Leather Dye

    • In order to protect your hands, wear rubber gloves when you are applying leather dye.

    • Leather dye comes in a variety of colors. Choose a color that is appropriate for the project. Many times the applied color can look differently than the dye looks in the bottle.

    • Apply the leather dye onto a soft cotton rag. Apply the dye in long, even strokes across the entire surface. Be sure to work in the direction of the grain of the wood.

    • Make sure the color is even and work quickly so that the last layer applied hasn't dried before you apply your next coat.

    • Apply enough coats to get the desired shape.

    • Mix a leather dye solvent with the leather dye to thin the dye and make a lighter shade. Follow the directions on the label. Oil-based dyes give richer color and water-based dyes yield a more even application.
