Finishing the Entry Table- Mask off the edges with blue painters tape to avoid any of the dye getting on the parts where the glue will go.
- Start with 180-grit sandpaper and sand the entire surface with an orbital sander (figure A). Go over it again with 220-grit sandpaper making sure all the edges are completely smooth. Once the surface is sanded, use a cloth and remove any loose dust from the wood.
- Wearing rubber gloves, apply the leather dye onto a clean cotton cloth and go over the entire surface with long even strokes going with the grain. Make sure to get into the tight crevices of the table (figure B). For a consistent finish, work fast enough so the last layer applied hasn't dried before you put down your next coat.
- Let the leather dye dry for 24 hours and then apply the wipe-on polyurethane to seal and protect the wood. Once the first coat of polyurethane has dried for four hours, go over the surface with a high grit sandpaper to smooth out the surface of the wood and prepare it for the next coat. Apply the second and third coat of polyurethane giving the finish luster and depth.
- Once the polyurethane is dry you are ready for assembly. Put a couple of drops of glue into each dowel hole. Pound the pegs into the side panels of the table.
- Next, put glue in the holes you drilled in the base of the table and carefully put in the side dowels into the bottom (figure C). Attach the second side piece and clamp it to the base.
- Install the biscuits into the slots on the miters. It is important to brush a small amount of glue in every slot and then join the mitered panels together.
- Use clamps to secure all four directions of the table (figure D).
- With a damp rag, wipe all the excess glue off from the joints and let this piece dry for 24 hours.
