The finishing steps in the inlaid corner table include flush-trimming the inlaid ebony, fastening the tabletop to the base and applying a wood finish.

    Materials:

    Cherry base and tabletop
    Hand scraper
    Sanding block; 220-grit sandpaper
    Hand drill; Forstner bit
    Figure-8 metal fasteners
    Tung-oil wood finish
    Paint brushes
    Rags

Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources.

Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with wood, power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc.

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves and eye-protection when working with wood stains, solvents and other toxic solutions.

    Steps:

    • Once the glue on the ebony inlay has dried, use a hand-scraper to flush trim the slightly oversized ebony inlay so that it is perfectly flush with the surface of the tabletop (figure A).

    • Use 220-grit sandpaper and a wood sanding-block to soften the exposed edges of the top and base (figure B).

    • The top is fastened to the base using figure-8 fasteners. These small metal fasteners secure the elements of the table together, but will allow for movement as the wood swells and shrinks from changes in humidity. Figure-8 fasteners were designed to accommodate that sort of movement, lessening the possibility that the wood could warp or crack over time.

    • Lay out the figure-8 fasteners on the top of the frame, and mark the locations (figure C).

    • Use a Forstner bit and hand-drill to cut the recesses in the apron for the fasteners (figure D).

    • Attach the fasteners into the apron using screws (figure E).

    • Flip the base over onto the bottom of the tabletop (figure F), and position it carefully.

    • Attach the base to the underside of the tabletop by placing screws in the exposed figure-8 fasteners (figure G).

    • To apply the finish, remove the top and figure-8 fasteners so that the whole table can be finished more easily.

    • We selected a finish of blended tung-oil and urethane to enhance the rich color and figure of the wood. Apply the finish with a brush and rub it in with a soft cloth (figure H).

    • After the first coat is dry, rub down the entire surface with "0000" steel wool.

    • Repeat this process four or five times, until a rich, smooth finish is reached.
