The veneer process makes the top look like one solid piece of wood. The top veneer is a madrone-burl with an unusual grain feature known as a spalting.

With the veneers successfully bonded to the tabletop substrate, the excess veneer is removed from the edges (figure A) using the table-router and flush-bearing bit. After it's scraped and sanded, the tabletop can be mounted to the base using metal figure-8 fasteners.

    Materials:

    Table router
    Hand-drill
    Forstner bit
    Figure-8 fasteners
    Potassium-dichromate finish

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents.

Safety Alert: Potassium dichromate is toxic. Wear protective gloves, and use caution when applying it.

    1. A hand-drill and Forstner bit are used to make the slight recesses in the apron (figure B) where the figure-8 fasteners will be secured with screws.

    2. The fasteners fit neatly into the recesses so that they are flush with the top surface of the apron (figure C).

    3. The table base is flipped over and positioned on the tabletop (figure D).

    4. The top is then fastened to the apron by installing screws through the holes in the fasteners (figure E)

    5. With the table all assembled, a potassium dichromate finish is applied (figure F). The finish is a solution of 1/2-teaspoon of potassium dichromate to 8 ounces of water.

The completed demilune table is a refined, elegant piece that radiates a romantic style. The wood finish brings out the natural red hues of the cherry wood, making a perfect frame for the madrone-burl top with its unique grain pattern. The unusual grain feature is known as a spalting (figure G) and is the result of a fungus that invaded the wood after the tree was dead.
