    Masters and Mentors Tour: Overview

David first visits James Krenov at his home and woodshop near Fort Bragg, California. Krenov is known for his old-world teaching philosophy that has become a prerequisite for the advanced woodworker throughout the world. The European-trained craftsman moved to Northern California in 1981 where he created and led the College of the Redwoods' Fine Woodworking School. In his twenty years with the school, he has taught hundreds of eager students from around the world while continuing to build his own fine furniture. He has also written a number of books on woodworking, including one that is regarded as a classic. His work exhibits a distinctive improvisational quality, and an approach to detail and design that he calls "music." In interviews and a tour of his shop, Krenov shares insights on furniture making.

Later David visits Art Espenet Carpenter at his home and studio in Bolinas, California. Carpenter is a self-taught master-craftsmen who, for the last four decades, has been a guiding light in the world of woodworking design and technique. His work has been exhibited internationally and is on display at The Smithsonian Institution. He has also been a leading force and teacher in establishing the respected Baulines Craftsman's Guild in Northern California. Carpenter's body of work has been referred to as one of experiment and innovation. His unique creations incorporate whimsy and have shown many woodworkers that they can be free to experiment and design as they please. His approach has genuinely expanded the boundaries of style in woodworking.

In the segment that follows, the "Masters and Mentors" tour begins at the home and workshop of James Krenov.
