    1. The shelves are 3/4" thick, so use 1/2" wide tape to mask the panel. This will allow the glue joint to be hidden by the shelves. Use a T-square to help guide the masking tape (figure A).

    2. To apply the coat of oil and polyurethane finish, use a wad of cloth to wipe it on (figure B).

Note: Long even strokes in the same direction as the grain pattern are best.

    3. After the first coat has been applied, let the finish dry for 24 hours.

    4. Lightly sand the surfaces using 500-grit sandpaper.

    5. Blow off the dust and apply the second coat.

    6. Repeat this process for a third coat until you have finished all the wood parts.

    7. With the back panel lying flat on a pair of saw horses, apply a little glue to the back edge of the first shelf and clamp it flush to the bottom.

    8. From underneath, pilot three holes and then screw the shelf to the back panel.

    9. Go light on the glue, and be sure to wipe off any glue that squeezes out.

    10. Cut a spacer to ensure that the spacing between the shelves is uniform and that they line up with the holes in the back panel that you drilled earlier with the hand held drill (figure C).

    11. Attach the aluminum brackets with sex bolts -- a two part fastener.

Note: Angle brackets hold two purposes -- to hold the panel off the wall to give it the illusion that it is floating in space and to give the panel beam strength and help keep it from warping or sagging. The entire thing attaches to the wall by the means of a Z-Clip. They work by interlocking on each other -- you put one on the panel and one on the wall and slide them together (figure D). The weight of the shelves will rest on the floor, but the Z-Clips will keep them from tipping over.
