  • Tool Cabinet: Interior Accessories and Finishing Touches
  • From "Wood Works"
    episode WWK-503

    PHOTO

The finished tool cabinet has sliding doors of koa to keep the contents of the cabinet free of sawdust and other contaminants common in woodshops. The combination of warm-hued cherry and richly figured koa make this cabinet beautiful as well as functional.

The tool cabinet is almost complete, except for the wood finish. Before adding the wood finish, we created space-saving accessories for the inside of the cabinet. These can be used to help keep cherished hand tools safe and organized.

    Materials:

Wood blocks and dowels for accessories
    Table saw
    Drill press
    Tung-oil wood finish
    Paint brushes
    Rags

Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David
Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources.

Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when
working with wood, power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc.

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves, and ensure adequate ventilation, when working with wood stains, solvents and other toxic solutions.

    • To make a stand to hold hand scrapers (figure A), a block of maple was cut with a band saw to create a curve on one edge.

    • Once the curved profile was cut out, kerf cuts -- spaced 1/4-inch apart -- were cut in the curved edge using the table saw (figure B). The block was then glued to a scrap piece of bubinga wood for a base. The kerfs cut in the block allow scrapers to be stood and stored upright.

    • Using just some wood dowels and a piece of scrap maple, we made a simple rack for safely storing hand planes in an upright position (figure C).

    • Drill holes in the maple for the dowels, spacing the dowels as necessary to accommodate your short and tall planes (figure D).

    • These are just a few suggestions. Customize the interior of your tool cabinet to suit the needs of your collection of hand tools.

    • With the cabinet assembled and organizing accessories made, the final step in this project is to apply a wood stain to the tool cabinet. We applied a tung oil finish to provide durable protection and to bring out the dramatic figure of the koa (figure E). The tung oil also beautified the cherry case, accenting the contrasting woods.
