In this episode, David Marks builds a wall-mountable magazine rack. In this final segment, the bins are attached to the frame and back using brass screws and glue, and the assembled magazine rack gets a tung-oil finish.

    Wall-Mountable Magazine Rack: Finishing Touches

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves, and ensure adequate ventilation, when working with wood stains, solvents and other toxic solutions. When working with some sprays and chemicals, a respirator mask may be required.

For the final assembly, we attached the bins to using glue in combination with brass screws. We pre-drilled and counter-sunk the holes for the brass screws. There were eight holes for each bin.

    • Use slow-setting plastic resin-glue to allow plenty of time for assembly and adjustment during glue-up. Apply glue to the slots and biscuits.

    • Position the bins (figures A and B).

    • Once all of the shelves are in place, secure them with brass screws (figure C). The screws will act as clamps to pull the parts together tightly.

    • For the finish (figure D), we opted for tung oil to enhance the figure and grain of the wood, and accentuate the contrast between the light fir and the dark wengae.

To attach the rack to the wall, consider creating a French cleat (figure E). Simply rip a piece of stock the width of the back, cutting it with a 45-degree angle. Attach one side to the rack using screws and glue, and the other side to the wall. Make certain that the piece attached to the wall is well-secured and level.
