Wall-Mounted Magazine-Rack: Final Assembly From "Wood Works" episode WWK-604

The complementary curves of the frame and bins combine with the sleek, connecting vertical lines to create stylish storage.

In this episode, David Marks builds a wall-mountable magazine rack. In this segment, the frame and back-panel are joined together in preparation for attaching the completed bins and the addition of some finishing touches.

Materials:

Disc sander
Sanding block
220-grit sandpaper
Carpenter's pencil
Yellow carpenter's tape
Safety glasses or goggles

Frame and Back Assembly

• the wengae frame-pieces, David traced a subtle curve onto the ends of the top-rail and stiles of the frame using an MDF template as a guide. The soft curves at the ends will complement the arcs of the frame.

• Using the disc sander, simply follow the lines to sand the ends smooth (figure A).

• With all of the cuts and slots complete, soften the edges of the frame using a hand-held router and 1/8" round-over bit (figure B).

• Next, it's a good idea to hand-sand all the pieces lightly with some 220-grit sandpaper (figure C).

• This hand-sanding will be much easier to do at this point, while you can still reach every surface.

  Note: When sanding the plywood back-panel, sand lightly to avoid sanding through the veneer.

• With sanding completed, the glue-up can begin.

• Use slow-setting plastic resin-glue to allow plenty of time for assembly and adjustment during glue-up. Apply glue to the slots, biscuits and lap-joints.

• Start the glue-up assembly with all of the pieces laid out. Assemble the stiles to the back-panel first, then attach the top-rail to the stiles and slide the frame into place with the back panel using a few taps with a dead-blow hammer (figure D). This process is made easy by the double-sized biscuit slots cut in the back panel earlier.

• Attach the bottom rail.

• Apply cauls and clamping pressure (figure E) and allow the glue to set overnight.
