Web Extra: Fretwork Design
The fret work for the end panels is achieved by first working out a design on paper. The paper design is attached onto the wood end-panel, and holes are drilled through the larger sections of the design to allow access with the scroll-saw blade. Once the design has been cut out (figure A), a hand-scraper and fine sandpaper are used to smooth the edges. To add a three-dimensional look, a flexible-shaft grinder to carve shallow channels to connect the individual sections (figure B) Click here to download a PDF file of David's illustration that he used for creating the carved fretwork in the dish-rack's end panel.
