With the side panels complete, final assembly can begin on the European dish rack. Once assembled, a tung-oil finish is applied. Materials: Yellow woodworker's glue Clamps Dead-blow hammer Tung-oil wood finish Paint brushes Rags Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources. Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with wood, power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc. Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves, and ensure adequate ventilation, when working with wood stains, solvents and other toxic solutions. Steps: - The glue-up is not complicated, but it should be done in the proper order. Begin by applying glue into the mortises on one of the side panels (figure A).
- Position and install the front assembly (figure B), followed by the back rails and support rail (figure C).
- Add the final side, and use a dead-blow hammer to gently tap the structure together (figure D).
- Clamp the whole assembly using four long bar-clamps, using cork-lined blocks to protect the wood from the clamps (figure E).
- Once the glue has dried for several hours, hand-sand the structure using some 220-grit sandpaper and add a wood finish. We opted for a tung-oil finish to amplify the dramatic figure of the quarter-sawn white oak (figure F).
Important: When this rack is filled with dishes it will be quite heavy. When you secure it to the wall using the French cleat, make sure that the attaching half of the cleat is secured to wall studs. Click here to order your tools and materials for this project from Woodcraft!
