With the cabinet and drawers assembled, the finishing steps for the apothecary cabinet include cutting beaded edges on the drawer-fronts, adding the brass hardware and applying a tung-oil finish.
Materials: Table-router; 1/8-inch radius bit Drill-press Brass drawer-pulls Tung-oil wood finish Paint brushes Rags Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources. Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with wood, power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc. Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains, solvents and other toxic solutions. Steps:
- With all the pieces complete, install the drawers in their compartments to ensure that all the elements are aligned properly. If necessary, use some sandpaper taped to a straight-edge to make minor adjustments to the alignment (figure A).
- The final sculpting touch is a curve cut on the edges of the drawer-fronts to complement the curve on the top and base pieces. Use a 1/8-inch radius bit at the router table to cut the curve on the edges of each drawer-front (figures B and C).
- After a final sanding, the hardware can be added. We opted for cast-brass drawer-pulls with an antique-patina finish (figure D).
- To attach the pulls, locate the exact center of each drawer-face, and pre-drill the screw-holes using a drill press (figure E).
- Attach the back-panel using yellow glue (figure F).
- Before applying a wood finish, apply a small amount of wax to the sides and bottom of each drawer, and the insides of each compartment, to ensure that the drawers operate smoothly.
- Remove the brass hardware (figure G), and do a final sanding, before applying a finish.
- With the hardware removed, we opted to apply a tung-oil finish to bring out the grain of the wood (figure H). Five coats were applied to achieve a silky finish. Replace the hardware after the finish has fully cured.
If you prefer darker tones, you could make this same cabinet out of mahogany plywood, using figured mahogany for the drawer-faces. Or, you could even combine two contrasting woods. Sponsored Resource > Click here to order your tools and materials for this project from Woodcraft!
