With the black walnut display-stand all assembled, the finishing touches are the addition of the wengae caps, and the application of wood finish.

    Materials:

    Wengae caps
    Yellow woodworker's glue
    Long clamps
    Tung oil
    Paint brushes
    Rags
    0000-grade steel wool
    Pre-cut glass shelves

Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources.

Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc.

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents.

    Steps:

    • To add the top and bottom caps, apply some yellow glue into the pre-drilled dowel holes in the caps and the leg pieces (figure A).

    • Brush some glue onto the end-grain, insert the dowels and set the caps in place (figure B).

    • Secure the caps -- at top and bottom -- with long clamps (figure C). Use cork-blocks in conjunction with the clamps to protect the wood.

    • Important: When gluing on the top caps, only glue three of the four in place. The fourth must be removable, to allow insertion of the top glass shelf.

    • Allow the glue to cure for several hours before applying the wood finish.

    • For this piece, a hand-rubbed tung oil finish was selected (figure D) to bring out the depth and beauty of the walnut grain. On a tall piece of furniture like this one, it's easiest to begin work at the bottom, and work your way toward the top.

    • Apply one coat, let it dry, then burnish the surface with some "0000" steel wool.

    • Apply a second coat.

    • Repeat this process from four to six times, depending on the finish you want.

    • Once the finish has dried completely, the pre-cut glass shelves can be installed. Use quarter-inch glass with a pencil-polished edge (figure E).
