The finishing steps in building the CD cabinet include adding the final piece of trim, the decorative door-handle and a tung-oil finish. Materials: Ebony stock Brass dowel Band saw Hand-router; two-fluted bit Hand-chisel Riffler files Carpenter's pencil Epoxy glue Tung-oil finish Paint brushes Rags Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources. Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc. Final Trim Piece Steps: - With the door attached, the fourth piece of corner trim can be installed. This piece, however, must fit over the brass hinges. Marks are laid out (figure A) for cutting notches in the trim.
- As with the door and cabinet, the notches in this piece of trim are cut out using a hand-router and two-flute carbide bit.
- Once the notches are routed out, the corners are squared up using a hand-chisel (figure B).
- Once the notches are cut, the last piece of trim can be glued (figure C).
- It's places in position (figure D) where it covers the hinges and is attached only to the door -- so that it can move when the door is opened.
- The glued assembly is clamped securely while the glue dries(figure E).
Decorative Door-Handle For a finishing touch, a door-handle shaped like a musical note (figure F) is hand-shaped out of ebony. Steps: - The design is drawn on the ebony stock and is cut out using the band saw (figure G).
- Once cut out, the decorative piece is shaped by hand using a variety of Riffler files (figure H).
- Pins are cut from brass dowels (figure I) to attach the piece to the door.
- Matching holes are drilled in the door and the handle (figure J) so that the handle can be attached using the brass pins.
- Epoxy glue is used to glue the handle in place.
Wood Finish Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents. - A tung-oil finish is selected for the finished piece.
- The oil is brushed on and rubbed into the wood (figure K). Four or five coats are applied.
- The tung oil heightens the contrast between the maple and black walnut.
When fully finished, the dark tones of the black walnut provide a rich frame for the light maple sections. The long, tapered corners add elegant accents, and the large angled frame on the top and base add substance and styling.
