    20. With the final details of the bear head completed, it's time to add some sealer and paint. First, so the colors of the paints don't run together or seam in too deep into the wood, spray the sealer evenly all over the piece (figure O).

    21. Because black bears are not solid black, begin by painting the bear a golden brown (figure P). Combine the paint color in a ratio of 2 parts water to 1 part acrylic (water based) paint. Then, give the rocks a base coat of a light gray (figure Q).

    23. Give the nose and the eyes a coat of deep black (figure T). And, using the carved line of the mouth and a fine brush, paint in the mouth (figure U). To put a sparkle in the bear's eye, take a little bit of the light gray color of the rocks on your fine brush and add a dot to each eye at 10 o'clock or at 2 o'clock (figure V).

    24. Finally, once the paint has dried, give the bear one final even coat of the sealer.

In part 1, Jim shows how to take a block of basswood and shape it into the outline of a bear's head. Also, featured are tips on locating the nose, eyes, and ears on the bear's head and getting them symmetrical on the bear's face.
