8. Now with the muzzle taking shape and roughed in, it's time to look to the eyes. Lay the pencil flat in the bridge of the bear's nose groove and push it into the eye channel to mark where the corner of the eye will fall (figures M & N).
9. Next, using the eye corner dots, draw out the shape of the eyes (Figure O).
10. Using a very sharp knife, start in the inside corner of the eye and cut outward (figure P). Don't make the eyes too small (figure Q).
11. Now, it's time for the ears. The ears are located on the bear from the eyes. Draw a line from the outside corner of each eye back to the ears. This will be the start of the inside corner of the ear. Then, from that line, trace the shape of the ear (figure R). To get the features in proportion, keep in mind that the ears stand approximately the same length (or height) as the length of the bear's nose.

12. Following the drawing of the ears, begin rounding the edges, forming and hollowing the ears on the bear's head using the abrasive cutting wheel (figures S, T, & U).

13. At the base of this piece, the bear's paw or foot is stepping out. Cut down the wood with the abrasive cutting tool around the foot area (figures V & W).
In part 2, Jim refines the details of the bear's face and carves the bear a fur coat. Then, finally, he gives the piece a black bear's natural color.
