  • Web Extra: Creating Mandrels
  • From "Woodturning Techniques"
    episode DWTT-104

If wood blanks are drilled before turning, they can be turned on mandrels which will automatically center the hole in the finished candlestick.

    • The mandrels are easily made from wood blanks about 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" x 2-1/4".

    • One blank can be held in a four-jaw chuck or a screw center. The other is drilled so that it will slide over the nose of the revolving tail center by pushing the tail piece against the piece in the chuck.

    • The 2 pieces are turned so the pressure between them drives both.

    • Then, the pieces are turned so that they taper to just under 3/4" diameter at the smallest point.

    • Now the drilled blanks can be pressure turned between the mandrels.
