In fine woodworking, beveled edges or ends are often used to give a softened or more decorative appearance to elements in a piece of furniture. Measured and marked with a bevel gauge. As seen in: Wood Works, episode 604, Wall-Mounted Magazine Rack Butt joint -- An easy -- but often weak -- technique for joining two boards together simply by gluing and pressing two flat surfaces together. Often made by gluing an end to an adjoining flat surface.

Biscuit -- A small, flat lozenge-shaped dowel for edge or corner-jointing. The wood biscuits are fitted into slots that are created /with a biscuit jointer. As seen in: DIY Woodworking, episode 103, Arts and Crafts BookcaseBiscuit joint -- A butt joint that is reinforced with football- or lozenge-shaped wooden "biscuits." The biscuits are usually made from compressed wood -- frequently birch. When the biscuit comes into contact with glue in the biscuit slot, it swells creating a tighter joint.
