In this episode of DIY's Wood Works, host David Marks has created a hand-turned bowl from sycamore. The bowl is rimmed with ebony using a special laminating process. The finishing touch for the bowl is a tung-oil finish to accentuate the curly figure of the sycamore and highlight the contrast between the light and dark woods.Materials: Tung-oil wood finish Paint brushes 0000-gauge steel wool Rags B>Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses, and follow proper safety precautions, when working with wood, power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc. Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves, and ensure adequate ventilation, when working with wood stains, solvents and other toxic solutions. When working with some sprays and chemicals, a respirator mask may be required.
- Apply a coat of tung oil using a paintbrush (figures A and B) and remove the excess with a soft cloth.
- Allow the finish to dry overnight.
- Smooth the finish using extra-fine steel wool.
- Repeat the process several times for a great finish.
Once you've mastered the techniques of turning bowls and laminating, you may want to experiment with other combinations of woods. And don't limit your design only to a rim. There's a lot of creative possibilities with turning.
