  • Redwood Garden-Gate: Finishing Touches
  • From "Wood Works"
    episode WWK-607

    PHOTO

This garden gate is made from salvaged redwood. The rich color of the redwood when finished complements the colorful pattern of the solid copper panel.
    PHOTO

A chemical patina process created a variety of colors and patterns on the copper.
The final steps in the creation of the garden gate are to apply a wood finish to the redwood frame and install the copper panel.

    Materials used in this segment:

    Micro-crystalline wax
    Buffing wheel
    Exterior oil finish
    Paintbrushes and rags
    Cordless drill
    Wood screws
    Goggles or protective glasses
    Protective gloves

Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses, and follow proper safety precautions, when working with wood, power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc.

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves, and ensure adequate ventilation, when working with wood stains, solvents and other toxic solutions. When working with some sprays and chemicals, a respirator mask may be required.

Garden Gate: Final Assembly and Finishing Touches

    • To make the colors last, and protect the copper surface, apply some micro-crystalline wax. This is a petroleum-derived wax that will protect the surface from the weather. Apply a coat with a rag (figure A) and allow it to dry.

    • Polish with a soft buffing wheel (figure B).

    • Repeat the process to apply a second protective coat.

    • For a durable finish, and to bring out the rich colors of the redwood, we opted to use an exterior oil-finish. Brush the finish on (figure C), then rub it in with a rag.

    • This finish produces a rich-looking surface and smooth sheen (figure D).

    • After the finish has dried, position the copper panel in the frame (figure E) and attach the stops to the gate with wood screws (figure F).

Install the gate with hinges and hardware that complement the look of the gate. We used stainless-steel hinges with an old-English style cast-bronze handle. Make sure that the hinges are heavy enough to support your gate.

Care Tip: Depending on the placement of the gate and exposure to the sun, you'll need to re-apply the oil finish periodically. Apply as often as needed.
