This classic raised-panel door is made with 1-1/2" solid jarrah -- a dense, reddish Australian wood related to eucalyptus. Jarrah machines well, typically has striking grain patterns and can be brought to a beautiful, polished wood finish.

The tung-oil finish brings out the rich, warm tone of the jarrah wood.

The final steps in the creation of the frame-and-panel door are final sanding, detailing and finishing.

    Materials:

    Sharp chisel
    120- and 220-grit sandpaper
    Sanding block
    Tung-oil wood finish
    Paint brushes
    Rags

Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources.

Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with wood, power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc.

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves, and ensure adequate ventilation, when working with wood stains, solvents and other toxic solutions.

    Steps:

    • Finish off the corners of the frame using a sharp chisel. Using a chisel, you can square of the corner angles and detail the area where the stop-routing was done. The objective is to bring the two 45-degree angles to a mitered corner (figure A). This is a delicate transition that must be done carefully by hand.

    • For final detailing use 120-grit sandpaper, followed up by 220-grit, to sand the door smooth.

    • Use a flat sanding-block on the flat areas (figure B), and a contoured block to sand the curved profile of the panel (figure C). Using a custom sanding-block like this allows precise and consistent sanding of the panel contours.

    • To seal in the beautiful reddish color and defined figure of the jarrah wood, we opted for a tung-oil finish (figure D). We applied five coats of oil, with a rub-down of extra-fine steel wool between coats. The tung oil brings the surface of the jarrah to a nice polish.
