With the elements all cut, and the inlay work done, the finishing steps for the blanket rack include an easy assembly and glue-up followed by application of a tung-oil finish. Materials: Assembly elements: legs, stretchers, crest-rail Table router; radius bit 220-grit sandpaper Yellow woodworker's glue Clamps Tung-oil finish Paint brushes Rags Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources. Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with wood, power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc. Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains, solvents and other toxic solutions. Steps: - Round over the edges of the crest-rail, legs and stretchers at the router table, using a 1/8-inch radius bit.
- Before starting assembly, smooth all of the surfaces using 220-grit sandpaper (figure A).
- The glue-up is simple since there are few parts, and the whole structure can be assembled all at once. Begin by applying glue to the mortises and tenons (figure B).
- Assemble the pieces (figure C).
- Clamp the assembly together with bar clamps (figure D), and let it cure for 2 hours.
- The finish is a two-stage process. The cherry wood is first oxidized by letting it cure, exposed to sunshine, in its raw state (figure E). Place the structure in the sun for several hours per day for a couple of days, or for more days, depending on how dark you want. This will darken the cherry to a reddish color, bringing out a rich, warm tone in the wood.
- Once the wood has darkened to your satisfaction, finish the piece using several coats of tung oil (figure F).
