The finishing steps in the creation of the contemporary walnut coat rack are cleaning up any rough edges and application of a fine wood-finish.

    Materials:

    Hand scraper
    Fine-grit sandpaper
    Polyurethane-based wood finish
    Paint brushes
    Rags

Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources.

Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc.

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents.

    Steps:

    • Remove the clamps from the dried assembly and stand the coat rack upright to check the construction (figure A).

    • Use a sharp hand-scraper to remove any remaining glue and clean up the wood surface (figure B).

    • Smooth the surfaces and edges with 220-grit sandpaper (figure C).

    • Finally, apply a wood finish of your choice. A project like this one could employ a variety of finishing techniques -- bleaching, dying, staining, pickling, etc.

    • For our demonstration, a simple hand-rubbed oil finish was selected to highlight the natural grain, depth and warm tone of the walnut. The finish used was a mixture of tung oil, linseed oil and polyurethane.

    • Use a paintbrush and rags to apply several coats of finish (figure D). Use extra-fine steel wool between coats to make the finish shine.

    • Care Tip: An occasional light dusting with a few drops of lemon oil will keep the coat rack's finish looking new.
