This art-deco inspired umbrella stand, with elegant tapers and solid base, exhibits both style and strength. The wood finish brings out the natural contrast between the rich purple heart frame and the warm, textured maple.

The finishing steps in creation of the art deco umbrella stand are to glue in the bottom panel, join the top section to the base and apply a wood finish..

    Materials:

    Premade top and base sections
    Plywood bottom panel
    Hammer
    Hand scraper
    Yellow woodworker's glue
    Carpenter's pencil
    Hand scraper
    Steel ruler
    Carpenter's tape
    Polyurethane wood finish
    Gel varnish
    Sandpaper: 320- and 600-grit
    Abrasive pad
    Paintbrushes
    Rags

Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his website -- information below under Resources.

Safety alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents.

    Steps:

    • Before final assembly can begin, the precut bottom panel must be glued in place (figure A). Use clamps and cauls to clamp the bottom panel in place as the glue dries.

    • To prepare the base for final assembly, remove the angled auxiliary blocks that were used in glue-up by striking each one sharply with a hammer (figure B). Because the blocks were cut from fir -- a softer wood -- they will separate easily from the glue bond without marring the purple heart of the base.

    • Use a hand-scraper to remove the epoxy glue left behind from the blocks (figure C).

    • For the final glue-up, dry-fit the top to the base. In the finished piece, there should be a 1/4" reveal around the bottom. Center the top onto the base using a steel ruler (figure D).

    • With the proper positioning established, mark the lines indicating the exact location (figure E).

    • Blue tape placed around the perimeter of the glue line will minimize the wood's exposure to glue and reduce cleanup time.

    • Apply glue to the base surface (figure F) as well as the bottom edge of the top portion of the stand.

    • Carefully position the top piece on the base (figure G) according to the reference marks.

    • Use cauls and clamps to apply downward pressure to the assembly (figure H), and let it dry for a few hours.

    • Because the umbrella stand will be subjected to moisture, it's best to apply a durable finish such as polyurethane. Start by applying one coat (figure I). After it has dried, sand with 320-grit sandpaper.

    • Apply a second coat.

    • To level the brush marks, gently sand the surface with 600-grit sandpaper, then rub with a fine abrasive pad to get a uniform sheen.

    • Finally, add a few coats of gel varnish for a satin-smooth finish.

Care tip: Place a towel in the bottom of the umbrella stand to collect any moisture that might be introduced by rained-upon umbrellas. To touch up the finish as needed, rough up the surface with an abrasive pad, and buff it up with some gel varnish.
