With the base assembled and laminated, and the top pieces made, the final steps in the creation of the pyramid pedestal table include attaching the top platform and marble top, and application of a wood finish. Materials: Assembled pyramid base Assembled wengae top-frames Yellow woodworker's glue Cordless drill and screwdriver attachment Tung oil Paint brushes Rags Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources. Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc. Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents. Steps: - The top platform is made by stacking the three frames together, then attaching the stack to the base with glue and screws. Begin by drilling pilot holes in the bottom (smallest) frame for the screws that will be used to fasten the platform to the base.
- Using yellow glue, attach the top frame to the middle frame.
- Once the glue has dried, attach the smaller frame (the one with pilot holes already pre-drilled) to the other two frames to complete the platform (figure A). Clamp the platform assembly to hold it secure as the glue dries.
- With the platform assembled, and the glue dry, apply some glue to the bottom of the smallest frame, and to the top of the pedestal, and position the platform on top of the pedestal (figure B).
- Secure the platform to the pedestal base using 1-1/2 inch drywall screws fastened using the pre-drilled holes (figure C).
- Cut a piece of 1/2-inch plywood to size, and glue it into the top frame so that it sits flush with the rabbet (figure D). This will give the marble-tile top additional support.
- Before installing the marble tile, apply a wood finish to the assembled piece. For this piece, a combination of tung oil, linseed oil and polyurethane was used to highlight the natural grain and rich color of the wood (figure E).
- Finally, once the finish has dried, insert the pre-cut marble tile into the top frame (figure F) as the crowning touch for the piece.
