The finishing steps in the magazine-rack project include addition of the brass-rod supports and completion of the final assembly. A tung-oil finish is also applied to enhance the natural beauty of black walnut. Materials: Black-walnut curved legs and wood stretchers Brass rods Band saw; bimetal blade Yellow woodworker's glue Slow-set epoxy glue Clamps Tung oil finish Paint brushes Rags "0000" steel wool Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources. Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc. Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents. Steps: - The supports for the magazines consist of twelve brass rods cut from 1/2-inch brass doweling. All twelve are cut to the exact same length. To simplify cutting, a board is clamed to the table of the band saw to act as a fence (figure A).
- Use a bimetal blade to cut the brass dowels to length. The bimetal blade is made to cut through wood or non-ferrous metals. Set the saw's guide low when cutting ( figure B) for safety and accuracy.
- Once the dowels are all cut to length, rough up their ends with sandpaper (figure C) to help the glue adhere to the rods.
- The glue-up is not complicated, but it all happens at one time rather than in stages. Lay all of the elements out on your work surface (figure D). One side is glued to the top stretcher using yellow glue. With that assembly sitting on its side, the brass rods are inserted and glued in place using slow-set epoxy glue. Then the assembly is completed.
- Apply yellow glue to the mortises and tenons (figure E) and the dados on the top stretcher (figure F).
- Insert the top stretcher between the tops of the two legs (figure G) and clamp both sides together (figure H).
- Apply epoxy into the holes where the brass rods will be inserted (figure I ). Use masking tape to protect the wood from glue that might squeeze out.
- Once both sides of the magazine rack have been glued and jointed together (figure J), use spacers to align the whole assembly (figure K).
- Then clamp the base firmly together (figure L) to allow the glue to dry.
- To finish the magazine rack, apply a hand-rubbed tung oil finish (figure M ). The tung oil will soak into the wood to reveal the depth and beauty of the black walnut. Apply several coats of tung oil and, between coats, use a fine steel wool to smooth out the surface.
Care Tip: To maintain the beauty of the magazine rack, buff the wood and the brass occasionally with "0000" steel wool, and follow up with a good furniture wax. Sponsored Resource > Click here to order your tools and materials for this project from Woodcraft!
