  • The Garden Box
  • Jimmy DiResta shows how to make a decorative and useful garden box out of pine using the table saw and radial arm saw.

    PHOTO

This decorative planter is ideal for bordering a porch or patio, or placing beneath a window.
To create the garden box, Jimmy attaches all sides using glue and a nail gun. He then adds a few decorative details and, last, adds holes for drainage.

Below is a summary of steps as seen in this Hammered project, as well as a list of materials and tools used.

    Materials and tools:

    wood (pine)
    chop saw
    table saw
    radial arm saw
    router
    nails
    wood glue
    band saw
    paint (green and yellow)

    Steps:

    1. Jimmy first cuts the piece that will become the bottom and smoothes the edges using a router.

    2. He then cuts the pieces to make the sides of the garden box and then bevels both the left and right side using the table saw and the radial arm saw. The beveled edge on the side pieces will create angled sides (figure A).

    3. Jimmy attaches the front and sides together using both glue and nails.

    4. Next he cuts the back, then glues and nails the frame together

    5. The next step is to create a lip around the top of our garden box using a piece of wood. Jimmy starts by using a router, then cuts the lip on the table saw then cuts it to fit using the chop saw.

    6. Next he draws, cuts and attaches decorations. He uses a band saw with a skinny blade to cut out some of the small, ornamental work. He then cuts out a profile, and splits it in half to create a "mirror image." He attaches the ornaments using glue and nails.

    7. With the box assembles, the next step is to paint it. Jimmy opted for a light yellow for the background and green for the detail.

    8. Finally Jimmy drills drainage holes in the bottom of the box (figure B) to allow for proper drainage for the plants.
