6. Turn the bench over on its side and place the bench bottom inside the frame so it stands up against the just-installed ledgers (figure F). Clamp down to make sure it is nice and tight. Again, use your countersink bit to drill holes through the underside of the ledgers and attach using the 1-1/4 inch screws. 7. Next, place the siding along the inside of the bench, gluing where the siding meets the frame and then clamping together. Finish by nailing 1-1/4 inch nails into the siding from the inside of the bench.
8. Now its time to make the bench lid. The lid will consist of two pieces connected together by a piano hinge. The large piece will act as the lid of the bench and the smaller piece will hold the weight of the bench lid when flipped over. The larger lid piece should over hang one inch on the front and two inches on the side. The back of the lid should end two inches from the back. Now, place the two-inch smaller piece against the back of the lid. Note that the smaller lid piece should not overhang the back of the bench. Place the piano hinge over the two pieces (figure G) and screw into each side.
9. Now that the hinge is attached, drill holes evenly down the end of the smaller piece using the countersink drill bit. Screw the piece to the frame using 1-1/4 inch screws (figure H) .10. To finalize your new bench chest (figure I), you can use a wood finish or paint with your desired color.
