This will make the surface smoother to allow for better paint application.
- Take a sanding block (figure A) to the wood to get to those edges that were missed with the orbital sander.
- Blow the piece off using a high-pressure air hose to remove all the sawdust.
- Thin the paint out a little and then apply it with a soft bristle brush.
- Once you have the consistency you want, begin to spread the first of three even coats on the wood.
- When the paint is finished, let the bench dry about four hours between each coat.
- Once the paint is dry, a couple coats of clear lacquer will keep the paint protected and give the piece just a little bit of sheen. Use a satin spray lacquer. Make sure to use a respirator due to the toxins in lacquer.
- Spray on two even coats of lacquer, allowing 30 minutes to dry between each coat. The casein paint dries to a matte finish and the satin spray lacquer will give it a little bit of sheen.
- Cut a 45-degree angle on the mild steel tubes on the abrasive cut off wheel.
- Clean up the edge on the disc sander.
- Secure the tube tightly in a 90-degree vice clamp and start to weld the base together (figure B).
