Painting the Bench and Constructing the Base

    1. Use a random orbital sander and swipe it across the wood. This will make the surface smoother to allow for better paint application.

    2. Take a sanding block (figure A) to the wood to get to those edges that were missed with the orbital sander.

    3. Blow the piece off using a high-pressure air hose to remove all the sawdust.

    4. Thin the paint out a little and then apply it with a soft bristle brush.

    5. Once you have the consistency you want, begin to spread the first of three even coats on the wood.

    6. When the paint is finished, let the bench dry about four hours between each coat.

    7. Once the paint is dry, a couple coats of clear lacquer will keep the paint protected and give the piece just a little bit of sheen. Use a satin spray lacquer. Make sure to use a respirator due to the toxins in lacquer.

    8. Spray on two even coats of lacquer, allowing 30 minutes to dry between each coat. The casein paint dries to a matte finish and the satin spray lacquer will give it a little bit of sheen.

    9. Cut a 45-degree angle on the mild steel tubes on the abrasive cut off wheel.

    10. Clean up the edge on the disc sander.

    11. Secure the tube tightly in a 90-degree vice clamp and start to weld the base together (figure B).
