Copper Patina, Final Assembly and Wood Finish

The finishing steps in the copper-based walnut bench are completion of the copper-patina process, final assembly and application of a wood finish.

    Materials:

    Micro-crystalline wax
    Yellow woodworker's glue
    Clamps
    Tung oil finish
    Extra-fine steel wool
    Paint brushes
    Rags
    Protective gloves

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents.

    • After the copper-veneered bases have had the chemical treatment applied and have seasoned within their plastic wraps for three weeks, the wrapping is removed to reveal the results of the treatment (figure A). At this point, the patina is very fragile. The plastic is removed very carefully to avoid damaging the encrusted surface.

    • Once unwrapped, the bases are placed in the sun to air-dry as the patina sets. After a few minutes of drying, the vibrant colors of the patina become visible (figure B). The bases are allowed to dry for a few hours.

    • Once dried thoroughly, the bases are gently washed and cleaned with a soft brush to remove the loose sawdust (figure C).

    • The bases are then placed in the sun once again to dry.

    • Finally, a few coats of micro-crystalline wax are applied to the finish by gentle dabbing (figure D). The wax will darken the patina temporarily, but it will lighten as it dries. Between coats of wax, the surface is gently buffed using a lamb's wool buffing-wheel.

    • With the patina process complete, the bench seat can be attached to the bases. Yellow glue is applied into the mortises and onto the tenons (figure E).

    • The bases are set in place (figure F)

    • The assembly is secured with cauls and clamps (figure G).

    • Once the glue dries, a hand-rubbed tung finish is applied to bring out the luster and grain of the walnut (figure H). The finish applied in our demonstration was a mixture of tung oil, linseed oil and polyurethane. Several coats were applied, with a light rubbing with extra-fine steel wool between coats.
