The finishing touches for the piano bench include fastening the top using brass hinges and adding a wood finish.

    Materials:

    220-grit sandpaper
    Brass butt-hinges
    Lid support
    Tung oil
    Paint brushes
    Clean rags
    Protective rubber gloves

Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with wood, saws, drills, routers, etc.

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents.

    Steps:

    • Use 220-grit sandpaper to smooth any remaining rough edges or sharp corners on the assembled bench.

    • Before applying a finish, remove any sanding dust with a tack rag, or blow it clean using compressed air (figure A).

    • Apply the finish before attaching the top and hinges. For this piece, a hand-rubbed tung oil finish was selected to highlight the mahogany grain. Apply the finish to the base and lid (figure B). Since the piano bench will likely receive a lot of wear, apply several coats for extra protection.

    • Once the finish has dried, the piano-bench lid is attached to the base using brass butt-hinges (figure C). Ebony spacers, cut to match the thickness of the hinges, are attached to the opposite side so that the lid sits level when closed.

    • Consider installing a lid-support to hold the lid up when the storage compartment is opened (figure D).

Care Tip: Apply some lemon oil occasionally, using a soft cloth, to keep your piano bench looking new.
