This contemporary oak step-ladder is sturdy and functional as well as visually attractive. The tung oil finish brings out the ray-fleck pattern of the quarter-sawn oak and enhances the accents of the ebony tenons and rosewood trim.

With the glue-up complete, the finishing touches for the oak step ladder include creating and installing the decorative ebony accents covering the screws, and applying a wood finish.

    Materials:

    Ebony stock for accent pieces
    Disc sander
    Band saw
    Woodworker's glue
    Tung oil finish
    Paint brushes
    Rags

Note: Cut sizes may vary. For exact measurements, please contact David Marks through his Web site -- information below under Resources.

Safety Alert: Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses when working with power-tools, saws, drills, routers, etc.

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents.

    Steps:

    • To create the ebony accents, mill up some ebony stock to 3/8-inch square, and bevel the edges using a disc sander (figure A). It's a good idea to use a jig to help hold the small pieces of stock at the proper angle for accurate bevels.

    • Once the ebony is beveled, use the band saw to cut 12 pieces to length (figure B)

    • Use yellow glue to install the accent pieces in the square mortises (figure C) to conceal the screws.

    • Once the accent pieces have been added, the final step is to apply a wood finish (figure D). A finish of tung oil was selected for this piece to bring out the natural grain of the wood.

Care Tip: To maintain the soft glow of the wood, dust off the piece occasionally with lemon oil.
