The mission-style ottoman in this project is constructed from quarter-sawn white oak -- a trademark of traditional arts and crafts style. The straight lines of the design and careful proportions of the wood spindles are characteristic to the mission style. The brown tones of the dyed wood give the piece warmth.

With the framework of the ottoman assembled and the glue dried, the ottoman is nearly complete. The finishing touches include dying the wood and installing the upholstered seat cushion.

    Materials:

    Aniline dye
    Paintbrushes
    Clean rags
    Protective rubber gloves

Safety Alert: Always wear protective gloves when working with wood stains and solvents.

For the wood finish, aniline dye is selected. This dye is one of the authentic finishes of the arts and crafts style period. A coal-tar derivative, it comes in powdered form (figure A) that mixes easily with hot water.

One of the advantages of aniline dye is that it doesn't contain pigments. For that reason, it won't obscure the grain of the wood. Instead, it will change the color of the wood while it highlights the grain, letting the natural pattern and rich, warm tones show through.

Apply the dye with a paintbrush, and rub it into the grain using a rag (figure B). Apply the dye in multiple thin coats to avoid runs, streaks and lap marks. Wear protective gloves to protect your skin from the harsh chemicals.

Once the finish has dried, the final step is to install the upholstered seat cushion (figure C). For our ottoman, dark-blue leather upholstery was selected.

The frame for the cushion was designed and tailored so that it seats snugly inside the posts of the ottoman and rests on runners attached inside the stretchers (figure D).

The functional design of the completed ottoman is straightforward yet strong and solid. The beveled through-tenons (figure E) add a nice visual touch, suggestive of the integral tenons and fine joinery used throughout the piece. The linear symmetry is of the piece highlighted by the ranks of straight spindles on either side. The warm, natural finish adds enduring appeal.
