    Figure E

    Materials:

    Piece of #2 knotty pine 1" x 6" x 6'
    1-3/4" - 2" finish nails
    Two #6 wood or drywall screws (1-1/2" - 2")
    Pencil
    Wood glue (for exterior use)
    Saw, hammer, screwdriver

    1. Measure board according to diagram (figure A and figure B) and cut. Here are the cut sizes:

      • Two side pieces are cut at a diagonal (see figure A, far left) -- two pieces combined equal 18" (reverse the pieces for an 8" - 10" split).

      • The front piece, which has the notch for the birds (see figure B), is 7-3/4" long.

      • The top piece is 8-1/4" long.

      • The back piece is 20" long.

      • The bottom piece is 4" long (extra if you want a deeper box).

    2. Nail sides to bottom (figure C).

    3. Glue and nail on the front.

    4. Glue and nail on the back -- leave a 1/4" air gap (figure D) on the top.

    5. Screw on the top so the box can be cleaned.

    6. Drill a hole for a stick, or nail it to the bottom (figure E).

    7. Decorate it as you please.

    8. Hang the birdhouse with a nail.

Tip: There is a little extra wood based on these dimensions, which you could adjust to make the birdhouse deeper by making the sides and front longer.

Products: All materials can be found at home building-supply stores, or use scraps you already have at home.
