The box is almost complete. The final steps are to clean up the edges and polish the box to a give it a beautiful shine.
- Try putting the top and bottom pieces together to ensure a tight fit, and that the grains match. Use a narrow parting tool to turn the inside groove (figure A) against the shoulder to adjust the threads if the grains don't line up.
Remove the cutter from the lathe, then remount the lid to sand and wax the inside. Position the tool rest close to the wood (figure B), then shave away small amounts of wood to taper the box toward the threads using a roughing gouge. Round off the edge where the two pieces fit together (figure C). Then, finish shaping the top. Lightly sand, then wax to leave a smooth finish.
Remove the top from the lathe.
Measure the depth of the bottom piece, then make a mark on the wood to indicate the depth. Using a roughing gouge, finish turning the bottom piece. Cut the piece free with a parting tool.
Turn a tenon on the wood that is left on the chuck (figure D), then slip the bottom piece over the tenon to hold in place on the lathe. Finish smoothing the wood, then sand and wax.
