Threaded Box: Hollowing From "Woodturning Techniques" episode DWTT-103

Once the top and bottom of the box have been established, you can start the hollowing process of each piece.

• Replace the lathes centers with chucks. Secure the bottom of the box by its tenons.

• Begin the hollowing process. Move the tool rest to the end of the wood to work across the face of the wood. Use a shallow gouge to smooth the end, then taper it into the center.
  

• Drill a hole into the cylinder (figure A). Rest the tool on its side, then insert into the hole to hollow out the center. The bevel edge of the tool rides against the center as you come outward (figure B).

• Move the tool rest to the side of the wood. Using a thin parting tool, create a tenon (figure C) to indicate where the threads will be located. When creating threads, keep in mind that you should have 20 threads per inch, which are at least three full threads.

• Use the parting tool to angle the edge (figure D) allowing the thread to begin smoothly. Then, use the tool to cut a small groove for the thread to the end at the back of the tenon.
