Master Woodturner Dave Hout shares his passion and skill with student Vince DeWitt on making various spin-tops.
Tools: 1/2" spindle gouge Chatter tool Machinist collet Mandrel Wood block Glued wood blanks Artists markersSteps:
- Starting with a dowel and disk, insert the dowel into the machinist collet (figure A). This will hold the dowel evenly while it's being turned. Thread the collet into the lathe, then put the mantle into the tail stock.
Use a spindle gouge with a pointed tip (figure B) to shape the wood disk, then shape the handle (figure C) until you get the desired look.
Make the final point on the end of the disk. This is what the top will spin on. To do this, use the bevel part of the spindle gouge rolling it toward the point (figure D) while it's turning.
