  • Finishing the Candlestick
  • Finishing the Candlestick
    From "Woodturning Techniques"
    episode DWTT-104

The secret to bringing out the beauty of the wood lies in careful sanding with fine-grit sandpaper and following with an application of abrasive pads.

    1. With the lathe turning, sand the piece with 150-grit sandpaper, gliding the paper over the surface rather than holding it in one spot to avoid sanding rings.

    2. Next, use 220-grit paper, which will start to highlight the surface of the wood (figure A).

    3. To remove any fine sand rings on the wood left by the sandpaper, stop the lathe and sand in the direction of the grain.

    4. Restart the lathe and make a final pass over the wood with abrasive nonwoven pads (figure B).

    5. Seal and add shine to the wood with a quick-drying lacquer spray varnish (figure C).

    6. Add lead shot to the openings in the base and glue felt pads over the openings (figure D).

    7. Turn the second candlestick, which will be one inch taller than the first, following the same steps. Or make several at varying heights.
